Pinion Auto.Shift: Read all about about the new Pinion automatic shift feature
The fully automatic feature lets you go from gear to gear without missing a beat. The Auto.Shift feature for e-bikes with Pinion Motor.Gearbox.Unit is blazing a trail in e-bike technology. FIT e-bikes with Pinion MGU include the new technology, and this post explains all you need to know about Pinion Auto.Shift.
Fully automatic shifting for your e-bike is now included in all FIT e-bikes with the Pinion Motor.Gearbox.Unit. As announced at Eurobike, the firmware release launched on September 27, 2024 marked the official start of the Auto.Shift and Auto.Shift.Pro functions for fully automatic gear changes with Pinion MGU. Good news: All e-bikes with Pinion MGU will have this feature after the update is installed. The dream of fully automatic shifting has become reality. Experts in the field are already predicting the start of a new era, as automatic gear shifting looks set to take the biking world by storm in the years ahead.

What is Pinion Auto.Shift?
So...what exactly is Pinion Auto.Shift? Basically, it is a clever software feature that enables you to shift gears on your e-bike automatically. But how does it work? First, set your desired pedalling frequency. The system then automatically selects the right speed so that you stay in the right pedalling frequency range, no matter what the terrain. For example, if you come to a slight incline, Pinion MGU automatically switches to a lower gear with Auto.Shift; when you head downhill, the system moves to a higher gear, keeping you in the ideal zone for pedalling frequency and pedalling resistance. This is an especially welcome feature for longer rides or unforeseen changes in terrain.
How does the new Pinion automatic shift feature work?
This automatic e-bike feature is based on an electric drive system that replaces the classic method of gear shifting. It is powered by the e-bike battery and controls each switching mode at lightning speed: Gear changes take just 0.2 seconds. Pinion Auto.Shift is controlled by sensors that measure speed, performance and pedalling frequency. The system uses the data to find the best speed for the respective ride conditions and pedalling frequency.

How do I activate the Pinion Auto.Shift mode?
Activating the new automatic feature is a breeze: Just press the front trigger button on the handlebars for at least two seconds, or press the «A» button on the remote e-shift. You can set your preferred pedalling frequency using the trigger in auto mode. Just press to move your cadence up or down in increments of 5. Incidentally, you will see an «A» on the display which indicates that you are in Auto.Shift mode.
On a practical note: you can also use Auto.Shift with the FIT E-Bike Control App. The new app release 1.16.0 lets riders easily change settings in the Auto.Shift system using the app. The app also lets you adjust the pedalling frequency. Please note: In addition to the new 1.16.0 app version, your e-bike also needs the latest firmware that became available on September 26, 2024 in the Maintenance Tool 2.0. Ask your specialist dealer which updates your e-bike needs. What’s more, the app allows for easy navigation of the drive screen using the F button on the FIT Remote Pure. This makes it even more convenient to use the automatic feature on your e-bike!
Can I set my e-bike’s automatic shift feature to my personal preferences?
The new Pinion Auto.Shift function is part of the Pinion Smart.Shift Technology. This means that Pinion MGUs have a number of gear modes that you can use to suit your own riding needs. Choose from one of four modes:
- Auto.Shift: The Auto.Shift mode was rolled out at the end of September and allows for fully automatic gear switching based on the pedalling frequency you select.
- Auto.Shift Pro: This is a particularly dynamic mode for e-mountain bikes. It lets you complement the automatic mode with manual gear shifting, for instance when you want to change your pedalling frequency during steep climbs. Just choose the gear you want, and the Pinion Auto.Shift Pro uses the new pedalling frequency as the new default. This can be selected only via the settings menu on the display or in the app.
- Start.Select: This is a shifting function that enables you to choose a pre-defined starting gear. The e-bike will switch to this gear once you come to a stop. This is especially great for commuters who stop at a lot of traffic lights.
- Pre.Select: This is the semi-automatic shift function, which makes sure that you continue in the right gear after coasting. It lets you pick up where you left off, so you can pedal even at high speeds with no lag.
