E-BIKE ACCESSORIES – 10 GADGETS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR CYCLING TOURS EASIER

From battery cases to combination locks – the list of specific accessories for e-bikes is almost endless. But which e-bike accessories are the most useful? And which do you definitely need for your e-bike adventures? In this article, we will introduce you to ten gadgets that you as an e-bike rider should definitely own.

1. A GOOD E-BIKE HELMET FOR EVERY KILOMETER

Whether or not your bike is powered by an electric drive, a good helmet should be part of every cyclist’s basic equipment, weekend cyclists and commuters alike. The safety requirements are particularly stringent when riding an e-bike. Because – thanks to the electric drive – you can travel at a higher speed, and the impact of a collision on an e-bike is also greater due to its higher weight. Specific e-bike helmets do much more than just protect against a collision; they have high-quality, comfortable padding and, thanks to sophisticated adjustment options, can also be adjusted to virtually any head shape. Depending on the model, there are also practical additional features such as integrated rain covers or a warning light on the back. And one more thing – some helmets also have an integrated visor. This may be useful if you don’t have your own cycling glasses and want to protect your eyes against the wind. These models are particularly recommended for riders with a fast S-pedelec.

2. A SECURE E-BIKE LOCK FOR ON THE GO

Most e-bikes cost several thousand euros, so it is important to take all possible steps to prevent your beloved e-bike from being stolen. One of these is the use of high-quality bicycle locks. As a rule of thumb, the value of the lock should be up to ten per cent of the purchase price of the bike. When you buy an expensive e-bike, you should never scrimp on the lock. U-locks, which are particularly hard to crack due to their solid metal construction, are considered particularly secure. Chain locks or folding locks can also be useful on e-bikes.

3. A GPS TRACKER FOR INCREASED SECURITY

In addition to a lock, it’s great to have a GPS tracker, too. If your e-bike is stolen, you can use this accessory to locate your bicycle and get the police on the right track to retrieve your bike. One example is the GPS tracker from It’s my Bike: a permanent multi-function assistant. The tracker not only helps you find your e-bike, it also triggers an emergency call in the event of a fall or accident and detects unwanted movements. As soon as it registers any movement, you will receive a push notification on your smartphone. The tracker is configured and controlled using the «It's my Bike» app.

4. A REPAIR KIT IN THE EVENT OF A BREAKDOWN

Even if bicycle tires are becoming safer, a breakdown can always happen. To make sure you can react immediately in the event of a flat tire, you should always carry a bicycle repair kit with you on a tour. This should include a mini pump, two tire levers to lift the tire off the rims, a piece of sandpaper to roughen the tube and stick-on tire patches. If you want to continue your journey faster, you should take a spare tube with you so that you can replace the whole tube. A mini-tool is also useful, as it allows you to tighten most of the bolts on a bike in no time at all – for example, if the saddle has slipped after a going over a large bump.

5. A GOOD FLOOR PUMP AT HOME

Quite apart from flat tires, it is completely normal for e-bike tires to lose air over time. For this reason, every e-biker should have a good stationary air pump in their garage at home. These pumps are slightly larger than mini pumps and have their own stand – hence the name. The longer barrel also makes it quicker and more comfortable to use than a mini pump.

6. A SPARE BATTERY FOR PARTICULARLY LONG TOURS

Even if the ranges of modern e-bikes are completely adequate for most tours, sometimes you still want to continue riding. Especially in the mountains, when the long, steep climbs consume a lot of battery energy, it’s useful to have a spare battery in your bike backpack. If your normal battery runs out, you can simply insert the charged battery. The result is twice the range – and it should be enough for you to cover the distance you have planned.

7. A BATTERY CASE FOR SAFE STORAGE OF YOUR E-BIKE BATTERY

The keywords here are replacement battery – you should never just chuck an e-bike battery into a backpack or store it somewhere unprotected. To keep it protected, the battery should always be transported in a suitable cover. This not only protects the battery from external impacts, but also from exposure to other substances such as liquids. To protect the contacts of the battery from water etc. during transport, many battery protective covers are made of neoprene or a similar material.

8. THE RIGHT PRODUCTS FOR E-BIKE CARE

You always have the most fun when your e-bike is running smoothly. That’s why it’s very important to maintain your e-bike on a regular basis. In addition to traditional cleaning equipment such as a cloth or a sponge, there are cleaning agents specially adapted to the materials and paints used on the e-bicycle. Bicycle care also includes lubricating the chain. Here, too, there are specific maintenance products that you can use. Assembly pastes are also very useful when assembling parts.

9. TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS FOR THE RIGHT TIRE PRESSURE

The right tire pressure is also essential for a perfect e-bike experience. Ultimately, it ensures that the e-bike rolls as smoothly as possible, that the tires offer firm grip and that the puncture protection of your tires works in the best possible way. There are now practical tools that allow you to monitor air pressure not only before but also while riding – similar to a tire pressure sensor in a car. One example is the tire pressure sensors (or TPMS for short) from FIT – they monitor the pressure and temperature of your e-bike tires and transmit the tire pressure data in real time via Bluetooth to the display of your e-bike or to the FIT E-Bike Control app. This allows you to keep an eye on tire pressure at all times and to react more quickly in the event of a loss of pressure.

10. A GREAT APP TO SUPPORT YOUR E-BIKE DISPLAY

The display on an e-bike is similar to the on-board computer in a car. It’s where you can find all the information you need about your e-bike and your ride. In many cases, you can add additional functions to your e-bike display by pairing it with a suitable app. You might choose the FIT E-Bike Control app or the Komoot app, which is considered to be the best-known app for planning e-bike tours. Once you have saved your tour on Komoot, you can synchronize it with the FIT e-bike control app. Not only can you enter settings more comfortably in the FIT app, manage multiple bikes and optionally use it as a drive screen, it can also be used as a navigation unit in combination with Komoot. This means you can easily follow your Komoot-generated tour with FIT.
