E-BIKE LED DISPLAY – WHAT THE DIGITAL COMMAND CENTERS CAN DO WHEN YOU'RE OUT AND ABOUT

Current speed, remaining range and, in some cases, even current location – your e-bike display shows you a variety of information. But what types of e-bike displays are there? And what exactly can the digital command centers do when you're out and about? We will answer these and other questions in this blog post.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DISPLAY

Small, inconspicuous, and yet so important. In recent years, the display has become an essential companion for all e-bike riders. This screen is now vital for any electric bicycle and in many ways, it fulfills the role that the speedometer does in a car. The reason for this is simple: the e-bike display not only provides an overview of all riding data at all times, but can also check the functionality of your e-bike. In many ways, the display is a sort of command center for the e-bike. Depending on the manufacturer, you can also set the desired riding mode or check the current range. But watch out: not all e-bike displays are the same. For this reason, we have set out the most important features and functions of the e-bike displays in detail below.

HOW DOES AN E-BIKE DISPLAY WORK?

But before we talk about the various display types and their functions, let’s first take a look at the basic technical design of an e-bike display. In principle, the LED display on e-bikes replaces conventional display aids on bicycles such as bicycle computers, and enables riding data to be displayed digitally. Like a bicycle computer, the e-bike display consists of a housing and a screen. Depending on the model, the displays may differ in terms of shape, size, and screen dimensions. The features are also not always the same, e.g. in terms of resolution or processing quality. As an example, the current FIT e-bike displays are made of scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and are therefore particularly robust.

Depending on the manufacturer, there are of course other unique selling points and features. Regardless of these, however, the display always acts as an extended component of the drive and is therefore usually provided by the drive manufacturer. One feature is the same for all manufacturers: e-bike displays are almost always mounted on the handlebars. They are often complemented by a so-called handlebar remote control, which is often referred to as the remote. It can be used to adjust the various motor assistance levels or to activate the boost function for a short-term boost of extra power (if offered by the respective manufacturer). Some models are also equipped with a touchscreen that combines the display and control panel.

WHAT TYPES OF E-BIKE DISPLAYS ARE THERE?

Here, too, it’s all depends on the drive manufacturer. In principle, however, there are two groups of e-bike displays on the market: compact e-bike displays that are quite small and light, and display basic data, and large color displays that display the various data in a very comprehensive and clear manner. Both groups have their advantages: the small displays save weight and create space on the handlebars, and the large displays offer more functions and more control. Which display is best for you depends entirely on what kind of biker you are. For sporty mountain e-bikers who like to ride on rough terrain, for example, we recommend a more compact display, whereas touring riders may enjoy the convenience of a larger display.

WHAT FEATURES DOES AN E-BIKE DISPLAY OFFER?

Now that we know the different display types, let’s take a closer look at the respective functions. The display on the handlebars shows the speed, battery level, pedal assist, time, current temperature, navigation, and a number of other functions. This will keep you informed of everything you need to know en route – and make your e-bike tours even more relaxing. Many e-bike displays, however, have much more detailed functions that are almost equivalent to those of a professional GPS bike computer. In the case of the FIT displays, these include additional display values such as calorie consumption, current performance, a temperature display, pedaling frequency, and an altimeter with incline and tilt display.

One notable function is the range forecast, and most modern e-bikes have a range indicator. This tells you how many kilometers you can cover with your current battery charge. Depending on the manufacturer, this is either by means of a direct mileage indicator on the display or LED lights on the bike. FIT e-bikes have the practical Geo-Range function, which you can use with the FIT e-bike app. This shows you on a map how far your e-bike will take you with the remaining battery capacity at the various assistance levels.

CAN I USE MY SMARTPHONE AS AN E-BIKE DISPLAY?

Which brings us to a question that many e-bikers ask: Can I use my smartphone as an e-bike display? The answer is "yes"! Again, it all depends on the manufacturer, as the smartphone app performs very different tasks depending on the drive and display. With the FIT E-Bike Control app, for example, your E-Bike is connected to the digital world everywhere. You can use the app to configure your e-bike according to your needs, use your smartphone as a key and even navigate. Exciting: The app can be connected to the Komoot touring portal so that you can view your Komoot tours on your smartphone display at any time, even in the FIT environment. With the additional FIT Drive Screen function, the app also shows you the riding data in horizontal mode. You can also check the current tire pressure in real time. The smartphone and app thus replace the classic e-bike display.

Attention: With S-Pedelecs, the center display must not be replaced with a smartphone. A display is mandatory here and the smartphone only serves as a supplement.
